high•ly tex•tured li•brar•i•an: A person who is a specialist in library work and has curly or kinky hair.
Welcome Kathy to Librarian Dreams.
1. What is your signature hair style and how do you achieve it?

My signature style is to start the week with a two-strand twist, then move to a twist out, then end the week with a weird combo twisty fro. I’ve done it several different ways over the years! Most recently, I’m using Oyin Handmade Whipped Pudding and a water/aloe juice spray combo. On twist out days, I respray and retwist at night with the spray and Oyin Handmade Hair Dew.
2. Which books could give insight on you as a person? Why?

Over the years, different books have touched me in different stages of my life. Right now I’m really struggling with my faith and where I am in my life so two books I keep reading are
Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller and Angry Conversations with God by Susan Isaacs. They each deal with their disbelief in ways that speak to me. I’ve known God all my life, only to think I’ve never known him. Turns out it’s normal! Whew!
3. What is your role at the library?
I’m the School Library Media Specialist at a middle school. We host grades 6 – 8. I do it all! Purchase, process, catalog, shelve, weed, reader’s advisory, book talks, monthly book clubs for 7/8, class visit, co-teach, co-plan, supervise in-house morning broadcast studio, and teach a video class! It’s a joy, most times. We just started doing a One Book, One School program and we culminated in a battle of the book (or a trivia day!)
4. What is your dream library job?
I used to think my dream job would be opening a teen bookstore. You see some children’s bookstores or general ones but no teen ones. I would combine it with whatever technology/gaming situations teens are into. As well as just a safe place to hang out while parents are at work. Now I think I want to be a teen librarian. I love the ordering and booktalking and would like to try my hand at programming without all the other responsibilities of a small school librarian.

I really enjoyed reading about Kathy. I’ll have to look out for Angry Conversations with God, it sounds good.
I thought you might like that book.
Wow…awesome Kathy & Evelyn. I love your blog Kathy…makes me want to dive into YA Lit. I will have to check out Susan Isaacs’ book.
Thank you.
Great article — I am loving this series!
I love the series too. If you know other librarians that fit the bill, let me know.
Great interview! Now I need to check out the books Kathy mentions.
I put a hold on the Angry Conversation book.
