Highly Textured Librarian: April Hathcock

high•ly tex•tured li•brar•i•an: A person who is a specialist in library work and has curly or kinky hair.

Welcome April to Librarian Dreams.

1. What is your signature hair style and how do you achieve it?

My signature style is a small ‘fro with a headband. I basically just let my hair do its own thing, but I make a point of taking good care of it so it can do its thing in a healthy way. I plait it up every night and pick it out every morning. I also wash and deep condition it at least once a week. It’s served me well my whole life, and I want to keep it that way!

2. Which book(s) could give insight on you as a person? Why?

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. I’m a big traveler; it’s in my blood. I come from a military family and have lived and traveled all over the world. I guess that’s part of the reason why I love the library so much. It allows me to “travel” even when I never leave home.

3. What is your role at the library?

I am a Questline Reference Assistant at the Orange County Library System in Orlando, FL. I provide telephone ready reference to patrons in our library district. I’m also a first semester MLIS distance student at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

4. What is your dream library job?

My dream library job would be to work as an academic reference law librarian. In another life, I was an attorney, and I love learning about and teaching others about the law. I also love researching and providing reference. If I could find a place that would allow me to combine those two loves, I’d be all set! Ooh, and if that place was located overseas, I’d be set even more!

  1. I love this ! I know I always say that but it’s always true. This almost makes me want to work in the library! Hey I use to work in a small library when u were 18 months old. I totally forgot that

  2. Great first post. My hair used to look like April’s, until I got bored and cut it all off last week.

I’m sure you’ll be working at the Hague or ICC soon, April. Good luck.
