Highly Textured Librarian: Ge Ge

high•ly tex•tured li•brar•i•an: A person who is a specialist in library work and has curly or kinky hair.

Welcome Ge Ge to Librarian Dreams.

1. What is your signature hair style and how do you achieve it?

My current hair style is a twist out. I use to apply water and twist it up at night, now I normally use Oyin Handmade’s Burnt Sugar Pomade to assist with the twists. Two days later, I take the twists out and moisturize with Frank Juice (also by Oyin Handmade).

2. Which book(s) could give insight on you as a person? Why?

Surprisingly, I did not read any books on hair care. I relied heavily on blogs – Curly Nikki, The Write Curl Diary, Black Girl with Long Hair – and YouTube videos. I know that this is supposed to be a ‘Library’ inspired blog post, but I’d probably be one of the geeks with my Nook Color browsing these websites.

3. What is your role at the library?

I have two jobs. The first one is as a full-time Library Assistant at a private, non-profit in DC. I handle all things Interlibrary Loan and I handle original cataloging and copy cataloging.

My part-time job is during the weekend at a local small university. I work as a Graduate Library Intern. This is a very generic title, but there are three other interns and we handle circulation, printing, and quick reference.

4. Do you have any interesting stories about how patrons or colleagues have reacted to your hair?

Since I work in DC, many women of color are natural or wear hair extensions. I have had positive experiences with my hair and there are people who comment on how long my hair has gotten.
