Happy Birthday Zora Neale Hurston!

zora neale hurston

Today is Zora Neale Hurston’s birthday. Her book, Their Eyes Were Watching God is in my top ten favorite novels of all time. So to celebrate her birthday I’d like to share a few links you can get click-y with.

The Zora Neale Hurston Trust maintains an official website for all things Zora, which contains all of her writing, a timeline, and reading group guides, and more. If you are brand new to Zora, I suggest reading her memoir Dust Tracks on the Road after reading Their Eyes Were Watching God.

The best biography I’ve read about ZNH is Wrapped in Rainbows by Valerie Boyd. I still haven’t finished this book, it’s so extensive. The Library of Congress has a collection of her plays, which includes images of her annotating her plays and sketches of sets. Cheryl Wall, an English professor at Rutgers University, has a YouTube video discussing Hurston’s ethnography and literature.

Also, if you happen to be in the DC Zoraarea today, the Hurston-Wright Foundation is hosting an event to celebrate her birthday and you can follow that up by dining at Eatonville, a restaurant themed after Hurston, and named after her hometown.
